I have to say, I’m super impressed by the product - Water Rat. My concerns were that the cattle would flick them out of the trough, but I’ve been using them in paddocks of 100 cows and calves, and this hasn’t been the case.
Also, often the water rat gets pushed under the lid of the trough, and I thought this would affect the connectivity. Again, this hasn’t been an issue.
My water trough went off about a week ago, and I wasn’t at the farm. Got the neighbor to go and investigate, and somehow the cows had turned off the tap from the tank to the water troughs, and they were indeed out of water. So a tank monitor would not have picked that up, which has always been my concern.

The Rain Gauge has been working well ..we've got a property that's 150km from our home block and it lets us know if we need to head out there when there's been a big storm or when we have had rain we might not need to rush out there cause we know the stock will be fine. We've got it away from our manual rain gauge so you can see a bit of variability in the rainfall over the place, and it helps with planting and all those sorts of things. It's been a good product.

I live 45 minutes drive from our farm and it's really important to know if something has gone wrong with the water because I can't be down there visiting everyday. Knowing that there's water in the trough that the cattle are drinking from is hugely important, and it has saved me a lot of time and worry. Really, a very cheap solution to the problem that I had, I’m actually going to buy another one to stick in my water tank as well.. I’ll have 2 systems working for me.

They saved us a lot of time when both valves came undone on a trough, and it started leaking all the water out, and looking on the dashboard, I could see the tank was dropping, so that just saved us running out of water. Terrific.

With our Water Rat we know exactly the moment things are getting low and if theres an issue we can go and rectify it. With our dry heat and high stock numbers the consequences could be huge if we dont have monitoring. Its not just about time and economics, it's peace of mind you cant put a price on.
